Clay zinnias, Jacquelyn Block

Since I have been on a flower streak this week, I decided to continue the theme for my pottery Wednesday. I’ve done tulips, roses, lavender, sunflowers and poppies before so today I thought I’d challenge myself with zinnias. The flower heads are pretty heavy so I made the tops separate from the stems and will glue them together after they’re fired.

Assembling the stems for the zinnias.

I made a total of five flowers, each with a stem with two leaves. The leaves are a long shot in making it through the process- not much area for the leaves to attach to the stems, but if I lose some, I should be able to glue them later when I attach the flower tops.

I enjoyed making these flowers but they were pretty time consuming. To make five of them took me the entire three hour time period. And this is just the first step. Once they have dried and are bisque fired , I’ll decorate them with glaze and fire them again. Then assemble them once they are all glaze fired.

Have you sculpted flowers before?
