Worn Denim, Jacquelyn Block

I wore my most comfortable jeans today. They are soft and faded and threadbare in spots. I probably should have retired them by now as they are beyond saving. But they are just so darn comfy. Contemplating my trousers fate helped inspire today’s painting.

My jeans, worn and frayed.

I limited my self to values of blue with a little bit of reddish brown for an accent. It was very reminiscent of the stitching and metal rivets on my jeans. I started off with a series of horizontal bands of blue and made them each different, evoking a worn ragged look. Then I added some detail with both the blue and brown to create areas of variation and wear, as well as dots and lines representing sewn and embroidered areas.

It is a fairly simple design, but I feel it effectively expresses how I was feeling about my garment. But with all art and especially so for abstract art what I envision and what the viewer sees are often quite disparate.

What do you see or find yourself feeling when viewing this piece?
