Shadows and Ice, Jacquelyn Block

This winter has been a little weird with the weather and my body seems to be confused and think that it should be warmer than it is. I’m sure those sixty degree days a week or so ago have a lot to do with it. But I was still somewhat surprised to see the canal behind my mom’s house still covered with ice. Looking out on it the shadows from the trees falling across the cloudy ice really captivated me.

I took several pictures up and down the canal. I lucked out that the sun was out and in the perfect position to throw those shadows across the ice. I may try and paint a watercolor with some of these pictures. Maybe I’ll wait to summer when I’ll need to be thinking cold thoughts.

Today was my birthday. I have had a great birthday weekend celebrating my 45th journey around the sun with my family and friends. It’s funny. Some days I feel so old and others so young yet. I wonder when that will change. I had that same dichotomy of feelings when I was in fifth grade, I remember. Maybe it’s just something I’ll never outgrow. I can’t wait to see if I still feel like a kid in my nineties.

Do you find shadows an interesting subject for art or photography?
