Under the Surface, Jacquelyn Block

Today I felt inspired to create a third painting in my grief series. I entered the first of this series into a show, but I won’t find out until next Wednesday if it was accepted. This particular show is very competitive- I didn’t get in last year, so we will have to wait and see if this year is luckier. So much of this process is subjective that I no longer feel too badly when my art is rejected. I’ve had pieces rejected that went on to place in the next show I entered.

The first is still my favorite, but I like the elemental aspects of this series. I feel the elements reflect some of the different stages of the grieving process. Now that I’m seeing the pictures all on the same page I realize that today’s is facing to the right. That was unintentional, but maybe it adds to the meaning. Maybe a little bit closer towards the future and healing? Now that I have earth, Fire and Water, that means I probably should make an air painting next.

Do you make artwork in series often, or ever?
