WIP – Ice Cream with Great Grandma, Jacquelyn Block

So I took a picture of my daughter and grandmother enjoying ice cream cones outside her rehab center. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful visit. We didn’t know at the time it would be our last. A few years ago, soon after I took my first watercolor class I printed out this picture. At that time I had neither the skill nor the confidence to even begin to paint it. Yesterday I needed a folder to carry the programs to the art opening and found this photo inside a folder on my shelf. I finally have the confidence to make a first attempt at this project. My morning zoom time was spent sketching out the composition and beginning the slow process of layering the colors to get the beautiful depth of shadow and light in the photo. So far I am happy with my progress. I can easily recognize my grandmother and daughter. I definitely need another day or two to work on this – it certainly looks incomplete right now, but for my first attempt, it’s turning out far better than I anticipated.

Is there a project you’ve wanted to attempt for a while that you feel ready to try?
