Another fun day in the pottery studio. I picked up some completed pieces, and I’ve shares some of today’s favorites. These are two of my favorite glazes lately. I should try layering them on the same piece and see how they do together. With pottery glazes you never know what you’re going to get unless you try it out.

The bulk of my time in class today was spent on this guy. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to work on today so I just started shaping a chunk of clay to see what it would reveal to me. First it was looking like a pear, then bird and finally it revealed itself to be a giraffe. I pulled up the photos of the giraffe I was painting during last summer’s paint out at the Detroit Zoo. The photos were to help me finish the watercolor I started that day, so I didn’t take them with a sculpture in mind but they helped me quite a bit. As giraffes are rather tall creatures, the angle of the photos allowed me to sculpt the giraffe anatomically correct. My fellow classmates were amused by my choice to do this, but why not? Although, even though I trimmed my fingernails before class, I still nearly succeeded in castrating the poor fella.

I used some of the scrap clay from around his legs to make a couple small figures while waiting for the giraffe to firm up a bit. I like making little figures to give away to kids. They love them so much, it just melts my heart.
Do you make tiny art to give away to kids?
