Today at pottery I spent nearly the entirety of my time on making this one project. I once again used the bisque mold I made of my face to start and then I made a combination of three dimensional flowers which I attached around the face and carved floral designs into the clay face. My husband had collected an assortment of leather working tools from garage sales and antique stores and found himself with several duplicate punches. He gave them to me and they worked well for the floral designs I wanted for this project.

I’m excited to see how this will look once fired. I was tempted to add a little underglaze before the bisque fire, but opted to wait so I can do a rub and scrub and emphasize the details in the carved areas.

If this one turns out nicely, the next one I’ll make with the gear stamps and cut outs for a steam punk feel. At the end of the session I had time to make a quick woven bowl. It was a rush job and I worked right up to cleanup time so I didn’t get a picture. As I didn’t wrap it to dry slowly there’s a good chance it’ll crack before making it into the kiln. I find out next week.

Other than flowers and gears, do you have some suggestions for me on ways to decorate more of the faces?
