Happy Mother’s Day, Jacquelyn Block

So, first off Happy Mother’s Day to all who identify as mothers in any way! Motherhood is complex and so are mothers, so if no one has wished you a happy Mother’s Day today, let me extend my wish to you.

I finished my rough draft of my script this morning and was able to get friends and family to read through it and catch my typos and errors. I am so grateful to everyone who helped me. It’s good to have a group of people looking through my work- everyone finds something that I and everyone else didn’t notice.

The main character in this script is a mother and her relationship to her daughter is a prominent part of my story. It feels very appropriate for a Mother’s Day submission. I enjoy entering into the NYCMidnight challenges and the screenwriting challenge is my favorite. The first year I participated, it was my first ever attempt at writing a screenplay. I really enjoy the process and the constraints of assigned genre, character and theme along with a deadline help keep me focused and help me to overcome my ADHD tendencies. If you like to write I recommend checking out their challenges. There are several short fiction competitions, rhyming stories and, of course, screenwriting. I really feel that my writing has improved considerably thanks to the feedback provided from the judges. The feedback I got on the round one script was excellent and I plan on applying the suggestions and perhaps submitting the revised version to other contests.

Do you write or participate in creative projects outside the realm of visual arts?
