Golden Gears, Jacquelyn Block

The gold wax finish that I ordered last week was delivered today, and I was very eager to try it out. My first experiment was on one of my recent pear sculptures. I had glazed it with textured amber so it was pretty dark, but I do love the effect of that glaze. I started with what I thought was a tiny amount of, but a little of this stuff goes a long way. It turned out super cool, but very heavy in the gold.

The next piece I used the smallest amount I could get for a more subtle look. This was my first gear wall hanging and I used a combination of molds and stamps that I made then bisqued. When I glazed it it had a very dark brown glaze with thicker glaze pooled in the texture. As it was lacking some of the details I was hoping for, I was hoping the gold would make this piece pop more.

After these two pieces, I felt the confidence to try it out on the sculpture I brought home yesterday with the open layering of gears. As you can see from the top layer it gave it a nice antique look. I added a few spots of stronger gold to some of the gears to look like the tarnish had scraped or worn off in that spot. I have always loved painting objects gold so this seems like a dangerous tool for me. I told my husband that I apologise in advance for his coming home one day to the house looking like it had the Midas touch, and our children were gold too.

Do you enjoy adding gold to paintings, sculptures or everyday objects?
