Soundspace – WIP, Jacquelyn Block

Today was a busy day running errands and getting ready for our art club’s Spring Show. I was still able to make it onto the second half of the Zoom with June. I used that time to work on the sketch of an idea I had yesterday during a Sundance Collab zoom webinar, where they were talking about the sound space, referring to the score, sound effects, music and dialogue within a movie scene. That term Soundspace, conjured up all sorts of visual ideas and stories in my head. I tried to incorporate some of those elements into my next painting.

Audionaut, Jacquelyn Block

The first thing I was thinking of was a human traveler entering this space. This Audionaut has a speaker inspired back pack, headphones designed into their helmet and what looks to be a tape deck on the belt.

Harmonic Squid, Jacquelyn Block

The next idea I sketched in was the Harmonic Squid. I didn’t actually look at reference photos of real life squids so maybe I should do that before I start painting. Or not.

Sonic Whales, Jacquelyn Block

My last element I wanted in this picture was Sonic Whales. I was originally imagining humpback whales, but once again didn’t want to look up actual humpback whale pictures so just started sketching them. They look whale like enough to express my vision and different enough to feel like this is a different dimension than our own. Then I sketched in swirly lines and loops that are reminiscent of my weather pattern painting I did for the Today’s Weather Show earlier this year.

Changing Fronts, Jacquelyn Block

I am happy with my sketch and will start painting it once I have some free time. It’s grad party weekend for my oldest so lots to do yet!

Have you ever been inspired by a random phrase to create something influenced by it?
