Self-portrait with Skull, Jacquelyn Block

I was looking through various paintings and photographs by Andy Warhol, for inspiration for another piece for the My Masterpiece show. I came across his 1977 Polaroid self portraits and he has a skull on his head or his shoulder. It reminded me of the selfie I took of Antonio on my shoulder. And I just so happened to have a recently completed skull sculpture so I decided to recreate this picture.

It was a challenge balancing my skull on my head. I didn’t design the skull with this in mind, and my head is pretty lumpy because I’m a klutz and have been banging it on things for the last 45 years. once I got the pics, I popped it into photoshop to get the coloring to match up better to his Polaroid. Maybe I’ll frame it in an instagram feed like border, a 2024 version of the Polaroid.

I have to admit I’m having a lot more fun with this theme than I thought I would. Generally, I prefer to do my own thing and find the idea of doing something in someone else’s style off putting. But taking these famous art works and artists and reinterpreting their style added to my own is fun. I don’t know if I’d continue beyond this show, but I’m enjoying myself in the moment.

How can you find inspiration from another artist while making something that is still very much you?
