For Uncle Mike, Jacquelyn Block

Today was Uncle Mike’s memorial and it was a lovely day for it. I was moved by the gun salute and Taps on the bugle. After the military honors, the personal stories and the collective toast of his favorite single malt certainly guaranteed no one left with dry eyes.

I had written a poem to read during the memorial, but left my phone at home. I didn’t have it memorized, and with all the revisions and reworking I do in the process I couldn’t just wing it. I was able to get home and print it out to give to Aunt Julie. She was very touched by the poem, so I’m glad I wrote it.

Tonight I took a little more time to format it better and add the thistle drawings. I actually painted them in color, but I like this b&w version for this purpose.

As this is a daily art blog, I’d love to hear your debates as whether you think poetry is considered art. I have a pretty loose interpretation of art due to my multi disciplinary inclination, but what do you think?
