Decorative Gourd, Jacquelyn Block

I’m feeling sad about how the election seems to be trending, here in the USA. I sat pondering what to do. It’s hard to make art sometimes when things are feeling overwhelming. So while my phone buzzes each time a state is called for the one or the other, I sat with my pen hovering over the paper. I decided to sketch a cool looking decorative gourd that I picked up from the farmer’s market. I just didn’t have the gumption to walk over to the other side of the room so instead I sketched from my memory of the gourd. As I was working, I’d remember a detail I’d forgotten, so it’s not realistic, but it looks like it could be a gourd. I think I’ll paint it in gouache for the Friday zoom. My color palette should suffice for the yellow and green squash.

How are you pushing yourself to create, as the politics and wars grip our world?
