Ornament from the basket weaving demo

Today was our club’s meeting with a demonstration following the business bit. The demo was on basket weaving and the artist brought in many different styles, sizes and shapes of baskets she made from a multitude of materials. She had a hands-on demo for us weaving a small ornament from the reeds. One of the club members mentioned it looked like you could use it for making a marionette and I was inspired.

Having never made a marionette, but having a basic idea of how they work I jumped right in to making a little marionette. My first attempt was a failure, but I switched materials and made a functional little marionette girl.

Rapid prototype marionette, Jacquelyn Block

It’s pretty basic and is assembled completely from objects at hand but it was a good first attempt. I am definitely going to try making some additional puppets, although with more planned out designs.

My sons’ and my Tiny art show paintings

After the meeting was done, we stopped to look at all the Tiny Art show pieces on display. It’s fun looking at all the ways my community interprets “Winter Wonderland.”

Have you made puppets before?
