Gasping for Air, Jacquelyn Block

Today my asthma is really kicking my butt. I can’t go more than a minute or two between wheezy coughs. I was holding off on using my inhaler until my art for today was done. The relief it give comes with a cost of shakiness, so not great for making art. Not that coughing and wheezing are much better. I decided to call this piece Gasping for Air, since that’s what I was doing while finishing up. Now, my rushed lines are part of the story.

It’s finally starting to quiet down a bit- the space between booms is increasing slightly as my neighbors exhaust their firework stockpiles. I alway wonder what an alien visitor would think if they happened to visit on the Fourth of July. It is quite crazy around here, I imagine it’s the same across the country. Do other countries have holidays celebrated with oodles of fireworks? I have a feeling this is a uniquely American phenomenon. It seems strange to me and I’ve lived here all my life.

What are your experiences with fireworks for this holiday or any other celebration?

Many countries celebrate their important days with tons of fireworks: France on July 14th, Canada on July 1st, etc. New Year’s celebrations can also get over the top in some parts of the world. What has changed is regulations. Here, you need a permit to have a fireworks in your backyard, due to the potential dangers, especially if your space is too small or close to your neighbors.

This year, it rained too much for fireworks to happen in my area, so I was happy. lol – I live in Canada.

I hope you are feeling better! I had hay fever every spring when I was a kid, and I still remember how terrible it felt. Asthma must be awful!

    Nice piece!

I think regulations and enforcement of them is severely lacking here. I just read that Detroit had the worst air quality in the world last night due to all the backyard fireworks. I know the air around my house was thick with smoke. Which I’m sure didn’t help my breathing issues. I’m fortunate that my asthma isn’t usually too bad but smoke is definitely a trigger for me.
